Middle East peace and justice vigil to be April 26
IOWA CITY--Iowans for Peace with Iraq, a University of Iowa student organization,
will hold a silent vigil in consideration of peace and justice in the Middle
East, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 26 on the Iowa City Pedestrian Mall.
Following the vigil at 7 p.m., the documentary, "Hidden Wars of Desert
Storm," will be screened in Room 23 of Phillips Hall. The video screening
if free and open to the public.
"The Middle East continues to generate troubling headlines daily. A
number of UI students and student groups feel Americans as a whole should
take a hard look at the history of U.S. involvement in that troubled region
and consider the consequences of U.S. foreign policy there, said Elena Perkhounkova,
one of the event organizers.
The video takes the audience back to the 1920s to trace the power struggles,
the development of oil production, and the involvement of the U.S. government
to gain control in the region. The film documents the events that lead up
to Desert Storm.
The April 26 events are co-sponsored by the General Union of Palestinian
Students and the Iowa International Socialist Organization.
