Women's Center offers workshop for student activists

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Women’s Resource and Action Center at the University of Iowa will co-sponsor "Grow: GrassRoots Organizing Weekend," a workshop for student activists, Friday through Sunday, April 20-22, on the University of Iowa campus.

GrassRoots Organizing Weekends (GROW) have been developed by students and community organizers to provide youth activists with the tools they need to build effective coalitions, find funding, and increase membership.

GROW weekend workshops have been used successfully on other campuses. "The systematic approach that GROW takes in organizing enhances your thought processes, making you a keen and agile activist, while ensuring that all details are considered. The GrassRoots Organizing Weekend is truly a source of empowerment for students individually and as a group," says Chocka Guiden, student government vice president at Portland State University.

The GROW weekend will run from 6 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Sunday, April 20-22. Trained student activists will facilitate each session. Because the workshops build on each other, it is critical for participants to attend all sessions.

There is a $25 fee for the training. Some scholarships are available. Space is limited, so participants are encouraged to register early. The workshop is part of the ongoing Social Change Training Program. Co-sponsors include Public Access Television, the UI School of Social Work, and UI Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Staff and Faculty Association. For more information, call the Women’s Center at (319) 335-1486.
