Association names two UI professors 'Accomplished Music Teachers'
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Iowa Music Educators Association has named two University
of Iowa professors "Accomplished Music Teachers." Kenneth Phillips,
a professor in the UI College of Education's Curriculum and Instruction Division,
and Myron Welch, a professor in the music department of the UI College of
Liberal Arts, were among 12 people from Iowa honored for their teaching skills
and efforts to advance music education.
Recipients of the award were chosen from each state among faculties of all
educational levels. They were selected for their teaching abilities and commitment
to the development of music in the education of children and adolescents.
Phillips teaches undergraduate courses in conducting, choral music and child
and adolescent voice as well as graduate research. Through his work on the
enhancement of vocal skills for young singers, he has developed innovative
methods that have had a great impact on the improvement of music education.
"It's a great feeling to be recognized outside of the university and
to know that we have had an impact on music education throughout the state
of Iowa," said Phillips.
Welch, who has worked as the director of bands at the UI for 21 years, conducts
the Symphony Band and Chamber Wind Ensemble and coordinates the Iowa Honor
Band. He has directed The All-State Music Camp for 18 years and also teaches
courses in instrumental methods and conducting.
"The university provides instruction to teachers around the state to
help improve music education, and it is wonderful to be recognized by them
for our efforts," said Welch.
In addition to this award, Phillips has received the James N. Murray Award,
the College of Education Outstanding Teacher Award and the Collegiate Teaching
Award. He has written two books; a third, "Directing the Choral Music
Program," will be released soon.
Welch is a past president of the American Bandmasters Association, the Iowa
Bandmasters Association, the North Central Division of the College Band Directors
National Association, and the Big Ten Band Directors Association. He also
has several upcoming concerts planned, including the Community Concert Series
performed by the UI band in Keokuk Dec. 3.
