UI minority student enrollment again exceeds Regents goal

IOWA CITY- Minority students account for 9.1 percent of the total full-time, on-campus enrollment at the University of Iowa this fall. This year marks the seventh consecutive year in which the UI's minority enrollment has exceeded the goal set by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, of achieving a minority enrollment of at least 8.5 percent.

Total minority enrollment for the current academic year is 2,532, down slightly from the 1999 total of 2,622.

"The good news is that enrollment is down slightly because graduation rates are up," said Joe D. Coulter, associate provost for diversity and director of Opportunity at Iowa.

"The decrease in the total number of enrolled minority students is in fact due to improvements in the graduation rates of minority students in recent years. Last year, 511 minority students graduated from the university, which is the second-highest graduating class of minorities ever to receive degrees from the university," Coulter said.

The number of new minority freshmen increased slightly this year to 329 in fall 2000 compared to 322 in 1999. Undergraduate minority enrollment stands at 1,595 for fall 2000 compared to 1,597 last year.

Minority enrollment at the UI has been rising steadily since 1984 when the percentage of minority students was less than 5 percent. Minority enrollment rose to 6 percent in 1988, increased to 7 percent in 1990 and increased still to 8 percent in 1993. In 1994, minority enrollment grew to 9 percent, the first time the UI exceeded the Regents' goal.

The figures for minority enrollment do not include foreign students who are attending the UI on student visas. This year, there are 1,967 foreign students on campus, an increase over the 1,697 enrolled last year.

"The university places a great emphasis on recruiting outstanding students from all ethnic backgrounds. These students, like students from other backgrounds, enrich the learning environment for all of us." Coulter says.
