UISG announces tuition survey results

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Results of last week's University of Iowa Student Government (UISG) -sponsored tuition spending survey yielded responses from nearly 1,000 students, the majority of whom said any increases from a proposed tuition and fee increase should be spent on funding for financial aid, providing Internet access and on-campus computing services.

The results are preliminary and will be forwarded today to UI President Mary Sue Coleman and will be presented publicly Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Richey Ballroom of the Iowa Memorial Union. The UISG plans to forward final results later this week to the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, who on Wednesday, Oct. 18 will vote whether to approve a 9 percent resident tuition and fee increase and a 9.9 percent increase for non-resident UI students. Roughly 72 percent of students who took part in the survey were residents, compared to 28 percent of non-residents.

UISG President Andy Stoll says the online survey was a success and that the UISG is very happy with the results and the large number of respondents. Last Tuesday through Thursday UI students cast their votes online using the UI-produced class registration site, ISIS on the web, hoping the results will influence tuition spending at the UI.

Among the undergraduate population responding, 35 percent of students said they pay their tuition with help from their parents. Another 32 percent of students cited financial aid, while 16 percent named scholarships and 5 percent from other sources.

On the question of "Where do you want to see your tuition and fees spent?" some 28 percent of undergraduates noted financial aid. Curriculum improvements rated second among 19 percent of respondents, while 11percent wanted to see additional building improvements, and 9 percent said the UI should hire more teachers.

Roughly 27 percent of undergraduate students and an identical percentage of graduate and professional students said the UI should use additional computer fee money to provide students access to the Internet with a DSL or other fiber optic network access provider. Another 14 percent of undergraduates said any additional computing fees should be used for technology improvements within the College of Liberal arts.

Roughly 60 percent of non-residents said "no" and 40 percent said "yes" to the question of whether they support the proposed 1 percent non-resident surcharge that would see monies used to attract out-of-state students.

This year marked the second year UISG has used an online format to gather students' input on issues that affect them. Roughly 26 percent of freshmen and 26 percent of sophomores responded to the survey. That compares with 27 percent of juniors and 21 percent of seniors. Approximately 82 percent of graduate and 18 percent of professional students participated in the survey. No international students participated in the survey.

Chris Linn, UISG vice president, added that the survey represents a collective student voice.

"Students have shared through this survey where their priorities lie. It's that collective voice that will be powerful in pushing the administration to involve students in the (tuition) process," Linn says.
