UI senior to discuss Afro-Brazilian martial art in Nov. 13 lecture
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The International Mondays lecture series will present
University of Iowa Senior Anne Haggerson speaking on "Capoeira: an Afro-Brazilian
martial art used to educate, empower and inspire youth in an impoverished
Afro-Brazilian neighborhood" from noon to 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 13 in Room
230 of the International Center on the UI campus. The series is free and open
to the public and includes a free lunch.
Haggerson is an anthropology major with a Spanish and Portuguese minor. She
will talk about the effects of the African Diaspora in Brazil and the present
day realities of Afro-Brazilian youth living in a poor favela (shantytown)
in Salvador, Bahia. The discussion will focus on Capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian
martial art, dance, philosophy and musical form, and the ways in which it
gives hope to disadvantaged Afro-Brazilian youth.
The International Mondays seminar series is sponsored by University of Iowa
International Programs and presents discussions with individuals who have
had international experiences. For more information, call Akua Akyea, at (319)
