UI to host summer journalism workshops for high school students July 23-28

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa School of Journalism and Mass Communications will host its 48th annual summer journalism workshops for high school students July 23-28.

The summer workshops offer a week of instruction in seven core workshops in the areas of yearbook, newspaper/newsmagazine, desktop publishing, photography I, photography II, broadcast and web site design. A new element to this year's program will be a number of mini-sessions, in which students will receive intensive instruction in specialized skills, such as PhotoShop scanning and photo enhancement; typography; specialized reporting and writing; publication design; and nameplate redesign.

More than 160 high school editors and staff members from Iowa and surrounding states are expected to participate, giving students the opportunity to learn from each other as well as experienced professionals. High school newspaper and yearbook advisors from Iowa and several other states will be the instructors.

"We're excited about this summer because of the programming changes being made, which will help our students move into a new publication production era in an environment of media conversion," said Vanessa Shelton, the director of the summer workshops. "The intensive mini-sessions will allow students to learn skills from other areas not in their core workshops, or this instruction can also enhance work done in their core area."

If registered by June 1, the fees are $330 for the yearbook or newspaper workshops and
$340 for the desktop publishing, photography I, photography II, broadcast or web site design workshops. Cost increases to $350 and $360, respectively, after June 1. The fee includes tuition, room and board in a UI residential hall, and some workshop supplies.

The fee for commuting students who register before June 1 is $255 for yearbook and newspaper workshops, and $270 for the desktop publishing, photography I, photography II, broadcast or web site design workshops. Cost increases to $270 and $290, respectively, after June 1.

The registration deadline is June 20. Some scholarships are available to summer workshop students. For more information, contact the UI Summer Journalism Workshops office at (319) 335-5833 or email ihspa@uiowa.edu
