Statement from President Coleman regarding racist emails at College of Dentistry

"On Tuesday, March 28, an anonymous person or persons sent a racist e-mail message to faculty members in the College of Dentistry. Individuals who received this message, or who subsequently became aware of the content, could reasonably be expected to react with outrage and a sense of insult and injustice. Let me assure you that we take this affront to the minority members of our community extremely seriously. We are using all the methods available to attempt to identify and confront the person or persons responsible for this act of cowardice and intimidation.

"I would like to state emphatically that the University condemns this act. Such conduct is despicable and has no place in an academic community that prides itself on its hospitality to people from all racial, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. This will in no way diminish the University's commitment to recruiting and retaining a diverse faculty, staff, and student body. We are all enriched by the presence and contributions of people of color.

"If it is determined that the person or persons responsible for this message are members of the campus community, I will recommend appropriate disciplinary or legal action."
