More stop signs are installed on Newton Road near new UI parking ramp
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Motorists traveling on Newton Road near Westlawn and
a new University of Iowa parking ramp currently under construction will see
two more sets of stop signs on a short stretch of that road beginning Monday,
March 27 through Friday, April 7.
The stop signs will mark two crosswalks for pedestrians, including people
using the Westlawn Day Care Center. The crosswalks will move pedestrians from
the walkway on the north side of Newton Road to the walkway on the south side
of the road and then back to get around a construction site.
The rerouting of pedestrian traffic is necessary because the walkway on
the north side of Newton Road will be blocked temporarily to allow the installation
of two 20-inch underground chilled water pipes at the southeast corner of
the Newton Road Parking Ramp.
Traffic control personnel will also be on site when vehicular traffic lanes
are temporarily blocked to allow construction equipment access to the site
where the pipes are being installed.
