UI Human Rights Committee plans March 6 public forum on sweatshop issue

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Committee on Human Rights is inviting comments from members of the university community on the development of a position against the use of labor sweatshops for the production of garments and athletic gear with University of Iowa logos.

The University of Iowa Committee on Human Rights is a different entity from the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR), which has announced today its own position on the sweatshop issue.

A public forum to discuss the issue will be Monday, March 6 from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the Richey Ballroom (formerly the Triangle Ballroom) on the third floor of the Iowa Memorial Union.

In addition to accepting comments at the forum, interested persons can mail comments to the Human Rights Committee, c/o 114 Jessup Hall, Iowa City, IA 52242; or e-mail comments to committee chair Laraine Carmichael Nelson at laraine-carmichael@uiowa.edu.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation in order to attend the forum or send comments to the Human Rights Committee, please call (319) 335-3114 in advance of the March 6 date of the forum.
