University of Iowa Museum of Art will show paintings by Gretchen Caracas, July 15-Oct. 8

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Paintings by Gretchen Caracas, a long-time Iowa City resident and former faculty member in the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History, will be featured in "Gretchen Caracas: Landscape and Memory," an exhibition on display at the UI Museum of Art
July 15-Oct. 8.

The retrospective exhibition will consist of 45 paintings -- borrowed from local collectors and the artist -- from the past two decades. The paintings were selected by Caracas, in conjunction with Pamela Trimpe, the curator of painting and sculpture at the Museum of Art.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalog, with an introductory essay on Caracas' art by Wallace Tomasini, UI professor of art history and former director of the School of Art and Art History.

Caracas takes as her subject the landscape, both external and internal, of her two homes -- the one in Iowa City and a second home in Ibiza, Spain. Urban scenes from the United States include motels, highway intersections, airports and fast-food restaurants. There are paintings of Spanish landscapes as well, and other paintings are still lifes that focus on vegetables and other plants.

"Whether inspired by Spain or Iowa, her paintings are filled with light and atmospheric nuances of vibrant color," Trimpe said.

Caracas was an adjunct faculty member in the UI School of Art and Art History from 1973 through 1992. A graduate of the UI, she continued her studies at Brooklyn Museum School and the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, Austria. Caracas' work has been featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout the United States, Spain and Italy.
