John Amend is appointed UI director of Facilities Services Group
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- John R. Amend, associate vice president for administration
at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), has been named associate vice
president and director of the University of Iowa Facilities Services Group.
Amend will begin his new duties Aug. 21. He replaces Richard Gibson, who retires
June 30 after 40 years of service to the UI.
As director of the Facilities Services Group (FSG), Amend will direct a
workforce of about 620 people in campus planning, design and construction
services, facilities planning, operations and maintenance, utilities, and
space planning and utilization. His appointment and annual salary of $120,500
are subject to approval by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa.
Since 1992, Amend has served as UNLV's senior campus facility officer responsible
for leadership and administration of planning, design, maintenance and operations
of the campus physical environment. Prior to that, he was UNLV's director
of facilities management from 1989 to 1992.
Amend, who is 48 years old, started his professional career at the University
of Nebraska, Lincoln. He was a civil engineering designer from 1974 to 1977
and a construction engineer from 1977 to 1981. In 1981, he was named assistant
director of the physical plant at Nebraska. From 1987 to 1988, he served as
interim director of the physical plant.
The new FSG director earned bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering
and a master of business administration degree from the University of Nebraska,
Amend's professional associations include memberships in the National Association
of College and University Business Officers, the Society of College and University
Planners, and the Association of Facilities Officers in Higher Education.
Duane DeRaad, director of UI utilities, will serve as interim FSG director
until Amend's arrival on campus in August.
