Sixth Annual Kris Rogers Memorial Golf Classic Is Sunday

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- From a distance it will seem like an ordinary gathering on the Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, a group of old and new friends enjoying their sport with a warm summer breeze and the scent of a freshly cut green.

Actually, the Kris Rogers Memorial Golf Classic, on Sunday, June 25, at 7:15 a.m., will be a memorable day for participants and community members who come together in the spirit of advancing women's athletics and funding cancer research.

The sixth annual golf tournament is a four-person best shot competition that will benefit the Kris Rogers Memorial Cancer Fund at the University of Iowa Cancer Center and the Kris Rogers Memorial Scholarship Fund, a part of the University of Iowa Women's Athletics Program.

Kris Rogers was an exceptional UI Hawkeye, playing both basketball and softball from 1976-1982. Inducted into the Iowa Softball Hall of Fame in 1992, Kris was also a successful businesswoman in Cedar Rapids, and featured in the magazine Complete Woman.

She lost her fight to melanoma at age 36 and has become an example of strength and stoicism for the patients, athletes, women and friends who honor her. Golf was a sport that Kris enjoyed in her later years, and the tournament is a way to celebrate her life and achievements.

The Kris Rogers Memorial Golf Classic has raised more than $30,000 for both funds, and in 1994, a permanent endowment was created in Kris's name to support in-state scholarships for women athletes. Proceeds from the Golf Classic go to the University of Iowa Foundation and support both women's athletics and cancer research.

"We have had a wonderful turnout in past years and have found that the Golf Classic is a great way for all of us to support cancer research and women's sports on a local level," said Dorothy Rogers, mother of Kris Rogers.

A $75 registration fee is required to participate in the golf event. This will cover the cost of green fees, a cart, prizes and the cookout following the competition. Donations made to either fund are appreciated. For more information, contact Dorothy Rogers at, (319) 338-4371.
