UI awards 20 Presidential Scholarships for Study Abroad

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa has awarded Presidential Scholarships for Study Abroad for the 2000-2001 academic year to 20 UI undergraduates. Created in 1983, the $1,000 scholarships assist undergraduates with the expenses of studying abroad and are funded by the Office of the Provost.

Scholarship winners are listed by state and hometown, with Iowa hometowns listed first:

IOWA

ALTOONA: Lisa Lawson, a junior Spanish and psychology major, will participate in the Council on International Educational Exchange's academic year program at the Universidad de Alcalá in Alcalá de Henares, Spain.

AMES: Maria Lutz, a senior industrial engineering major, studied at the University of Auckland in New Zealand during the spring semester.

CEDAR RAPIDS: Joan Kato, a freshman pre-business major with a Spanish minor, participated this spring in the University of Iowa's Semester in Venezuela program, based at the Universidad de los Andes in Merida, Venezuela. Jaime L. Teahen, a junior political science and global studies major, will study for an academic year at the Universidad Popular Autonoma del Estado del Puebla in Puebla, Mexico, through the University of Iowa/International Student Exchange Program.

CLINTON: Anne M. Jennings, a sophomore double major in anthropology and English, will participate next spring in the University of Iowa/Council on International Educational Exchange program at the Universidad de Sevilla, Spain. Trent Pals, a junior mechanical engineering major, studied at the University of Southern Queensland in Toowoomba, Australia, during the spring semester through the University of Iowa/International Student Exchange Program.

COLUMBUS JUNCTION: Judd Moore, a junior Spanish and English major, will participate this fall in the University of Iowa/Council on International Educational Exchange program at the Universidad de Sevilla, Spain.

DUNDEE: Kate Lechtenberg, a sophomore English major, will participate in the School for International Training's fall semester Arts & Culture program in Dakar, Senegal.

DYERSVILLE: Nicholas Deacon, a senior environmental sciences major, will participate in the Council on International Educational Exchange's fall semester tropical biology program in Monteverde, Costa Rica.

IOWA CITY: Angela Fuhrmeister, a sophomore German major, will participate in the University of Iowa's Academic Year in Freiburg program based at Albert-Ludwigs Universität in Freiburg, Germany. Ken Jones, a junior chemical engineering major, will study for an academic year at the University of Wales Swansea through the Iowa Regents Semester in Wales program and the UI/Global Engineering Education Exchange. Nathan Kron will be enrolled at the Universidad Nacional Autonoma in Heredia, Costa Rica, during the spring semester through the University of Iowa/International Student Exchange Program.

KALONA: Ian Brenneman, a junior Japanese studies major, will participate in the University of Iowa's exchange program with Nanzan University in Nagoya, Japan, during the next academic year.

LIME SPRINGS: Holly Wherry, a sophomore art major, will be enrolled for an academic year at the Université de Picardie in Amiens, France, through the University of Iowa/International Student Exchange Program.

NEW HAMPTON: Jarrett Haskovec, a sophomore global studies major, will participate in the University of Iowa's exchange with Aalborg University in Denmark during the next academic year.

URBANDALE: Jennifer Moon, a senior art major, will participate in the University of Iowa's Fall Semester in South India program based in Mysore, India.

ALABAMA

AUBURN: Lisa Madsen, a sophomore psychology and pre-medicine major, will participate next spring in the International Education of Students' program in Paris, France.

ILLINOIS

DUNLAP: Angela Klintworth, a junior majoring in journalism and mass communication, will participate next spring in the University of Iowa/Council on International Educational Exchange program at the Universidad de Sevilla, Spain.

ELGIN: Jesse Elliott, a sophomore double major in global studies and comparative literature, is planning to enroll next spring in the Universidad Católica del Uruguay in Montevideo, Uruguay, through the University of Iowa/International Student Exchange Program.

ELIZABETH: Molly Young, a junior global studies major, participated this spring in the University of Iowa's Semester in Venezuela program, based at the Universidad de los Andes in Merida, Venezuela.
