UI Press' 'Out of Girls' Room' makes influential list of best new books

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The American Booksellers Association has launched a University of Iowa Press title to national success.

Thisbe Nissen's "Out of the Girls' Room and Into the Night," is among 76 titles noted in the January/February 2000 edition of "Book Sense 76," a semi-monthly list of best new books recommended by independent bookstores across the nation.

The voting by 1,000 independent booksellers makes the award-winning work of short fiction the very first book by any university press to receive top-balloting from the national organization.

"Out of the Girls' Room," is an offbeat collection of stories, elongated riffs on that we call…love. All manner of love stories: thwarted love stories, imaginary love stories, love stories offhand and obsessive, philosophical love stories, erudite love stories and amusing love stories are included in this spirited collection.

Recognition by "Book Sense" led to a frenzy of rights interest from New York publishers, resulting in the purchase of paperback rights by Vintage books. The campaign also led to a furor of book buying.

"Out of the Girls' Room," has sold out since being listed by "Book Sense" and is now in a second print run, says Megan Scott, publicist, UI Press. "Book Sense 76" also sparked tremendous sales for "Boomer Girls" soon after it was placed on the October list, Scott says.

"Boomer Girls: Poems by Women of the Baby Boom Generation," (UI Press) an anthology of coming-of-age poems written by women born between 1945 and 1964, edited by Pamela Gemin and Paula Sergi, has sold 5,000 copies and received six-of-six possible stars as reviewed by Amazon.com customers. The online bookseller's customers gave "Out of the Girls' Room" a five-star review.

Nissen, a West Liberty resident, is a graduate of the Iowa Writers' Workshop and was awarded a 1998 James Michener-Paul Engle Fellowship.

"Out of the Girls' Room and into the Night" (250 pages; $19.95 paper 0-87745-691-7) and "Boomer Girls: Poems by Women from the Baby Boom Generation (252 pages; $15.95 paper 0-87745-687-9; $44.95 hardcover 0-87745-698-4) are available in bookstores, online from the UI Press at http://www.uiowa.edu/~uipress or by calling 1-800-621-2736.
