Prepare our Daughters for Life program set for March 2

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- On Thursday, March 2, the University of Iowa will hold its first Prepare our Daughters for Life program for UI staff and faculty, who may bring their school-aged children to campus to participate in workshops focused on creativity, science, computers and other events.

The Prepare Our Daughters for Life program, renamed this year from the national program after which it is modeled, Take Our Daughters to Work Day, will encourage girls' confidence, inquisitiveness, and resilience by providing them the opportunities to explore a wide range of careers available to them, event organizers say.

The program's sponsors, the Office of Affirmative Action, UI Work Life and the Office of the Provost, and others, say the program also is intended to address the research findings that indicate a decline in girls' self-esteem and intellectual development as they approach adolescence.

The event will be from 12:15 to 4:30 p.m. and includes a workshop for parents, presented by Christine Brus, director, UI Women in Science and Engineering. Persons who wish to participate in any of the program's activities should RSVP with the Office of Affirmative Action by Friday, Feb. 25.

Attendees are invited to participate in the "Books for Strong Women" drive by donating a new or used book at the door on the day of the event. Books that depict strong female characters, multiracial images, and messages of empowerment are sought for readers of all ages and will be donated to the Domestic Violence Intervention Program.

Organizers anticipate significant participation by UI staff, faculty and their partners since the daylong event occurs when schools in the Iowa City Community School District will be closed due to a district conference.

Prepare Our Daughters for Life is also sponsored by the Women in Science in Engineering program, the UI Staff Council, The Associated University Women, the Council on the Status of Women, the Iowa Women's Foundation, the University Life Centers, and the Women's Resource and Action Center.

Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to attend all University of Iowa-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation in order to participate in this program, please contact the Office of Affirmative Action at 335-0705 (voice) or 335-0697 (text).

For more information on the program and to register, call the Office of Affirmative or send e-mail with name of UI employee, name(s) and age(s) of children to affirm@uiowa.edu .
