Events planned for Gloria Steinem's Feb. 16 talk
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Gloria Steinem, who became well-known in the early 1970s
for her role in advancing women's issues, will speak to a University of Iowa
campus and community audience at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16 as the University
of Iowa Lecture Committee's 10th annual Distinguished Lecturer. Steinem's
talk, free and open to the public, will be at the Iowa Memorial Union Main
The Lecture Committee has arranged three events focusing on feminism and
activism, centered around Steinem's visit.
-- "My Feminism" and "The Righteous Babes", two documentaries
showcasing feminism and artists such as Ani Difranco and Madonna will be shown
back-to-back beginning at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 15 at the Terrace Room Lobby
in the IMU. Sponsored by the BIJOU and the Lecture Committee.
-- Brown Bag Luncheon, "Activism in Action: How to Become an Activist,"
noon-1:30 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 16, Ohio State Room, IMU. Sponsored by the
Women's Resource and Action Center, the Rape Victims Advocacy Program and
the Women's Campus Coalition.
-- Jennifer Danielson Band plays for a public audience prior to Gloria Steinem's
talk at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, Main Lounge, IMU. Sponsored by the UI
Steinem is one of the country's most widely read and critically acclaimed
writers and editors. She is an editorial consultant for Ms. Magazine, a publication
she co-founded in 1972. Her most recent book, "Moving Beyond Words,"
published in 1994 follows her 1992 bestseller, "Revolution from Within:
A Book of Self-Esteem." Other of Steinem's writings have appeared in
New York magazine, a weekly she helped to found in 1968.
Steinem helped to found the Ms. Foundation for women, the National Women's
Political Caucus, a non-partisan group devoted to advancing pro-equality of
women of all races in elected and appointed office and several other women's
groups, including the Coalition of Labor Women.
