LONDON PROGRAM INFORMATION SESSION FEB. 14 – The University of Iowa Henry B. Tippie College of Business is offering an information session on Feb. 14 in W401 of the Pappajohn Business Building about an undergraduate study abroad program in London from May 14 to May 28.

Students in the London program earn three semester hours as 6F:130 International Finance, taught by UI finance professor Paul Weller. Students must have taken 6F:100, Introductory Financial Management, as a prerequisite for the program.

The program's cost is $2,500, which includes the cost of housing, course registration and cultural programs. Cost excludes airfare and living expenses.

SMALL BUSINESS STRATEGIES WORKSHOP FEB. 26 – The University of Iowa Small Business Development Center will host a workshop entitled "Turn Markets Into Money with Super Marketing Small Business Strategies" on Saturday, Feb. 26 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in S401 of the Pappajohn Business Building.

Included in the workshop will be how to evaluate research data in order to make informed decisions about marketing strategies and budget, how to create personal selling frameworks, how to produce effective advertising within correctly targeted media, how to better understand customer motivations and how to do low-cost marketing research.

Workshop facilitator Robert Knotek has been a management consultant in private practice since 1984 and is currently the principal of Kaes Analytics, Inc., an international consulting firm that focuses on economic development through entrepreneurship strategies.

Cost of the workshop is $99 before Feb. 15. Early registers receive Knotek's article, "Making Marketing Miracles Happen." Dress code for the workshop is business casual. To register or for more information, call (319) 335-3742.

FORMER ENZYMED, INC. CEO/DIRECTOR TO SPEAK FEB. 28 -- The University of Iowa Small Business Development Center and the John Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center will sponsor a free brown bag lunch featuring speaker Kurt F. Heiar, former CEO and Director of EnzyMed, Inc., from noon to 1 p.m. Feb. 28 in the East Room UIHC, 7th floor.

Heiar will speak about critical success factors for start-up companies. He was CEO/Director of EnzyMed, Inc., a privately-owned, Coralville-based drug and agrochemical discovery company from 1996 until its recent acquisition by Albany Molecular Research, Inc. He completed his undergraduate studies at the UI and his graduate work in business at Pepperdine University. He was elected to the board of directors of the Iowa Biotechnology Association in 1997.

NONPROFIT ORGANIZATION MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP FEB. 29, MARCH 1 -- The University of Iowa Small Business Development Center will sponsor a workshop entitled, "Tools and Techniques of Super Planning and Management for Nonprofit Organizations" on Feb. 29 and March 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Room S401 of the Pappajohn Business Building.

The workshop will focus on entrepreneurial management and planning practices to use in nonprofit organizations. It will also let participants begin to create solid business plans for the challenges of the new millennium.

Workshop facilitator Robert F. Knotek has been a successful corporate manager, entrepreneur and university educator. He has also been very involved in volunteer, nonprofit, non-governmental and cooperative associations, which include the American Red Cross, American Mensa, the Eden Prairie (Minn.) strategic school planning board.

BUSINESS TAX EXPO MARCH 7 -- The University of Iowa Small Business Development Center is hosting March 7 its "Small Business Tax Expo" March 7, at which business owners can learn about the implications of federal taxes on their operations.

The seminar is from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Iowa City Public Library, 123 S. Linn St. in Iowa City.

Participants will learn about the different forms of businesses and their tax implications, differences between employees and independent contractors, when to withhold employee taxes and how to prevent tax problems.
