UI Council on Disability Awareness award ceremony set for Feb. 23

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Council on Disability Awareness (CDA) will hold a ceremony announcing two CDA Achievement Award winners from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23 in the South Room at the Iowa Memorial Union. The ceremony was originally scheduled for Jan. 19 but was postponed due to inclement weather.

This year the CDA will honor the Special Care Program of the Geriatric Mobile Dental Unit in the UI College of Dentistry for its outstanding service to persons with disabilities and its educational value to dental students. Directed by Howard Cowen, D.D.S., UI assistant professor of preventive and community dentistry, the unit visits 10 long-term care facilities within a 40-mile radius of Iowa City, as well as a number of homebound and hospice patients and elderly adults.

Christine Bromley, a research assistant in the UI department of pathology, also will be honored for her extraordinary support as a supervisor of a disabled UI staff member. Due to Bromley's proactive and outstanding contribution, the disabled staff member's work life was dramatically enhanced and enriched.

Founded in 1990, the CDA is comprised of UI students, faculty, staff and community members. Its goal is to promote an environment that encourages and permits people with disabilities to participate in educational, occupational, social and cultural opportunities at the UI as well as raise awareness on disability issues. CDA activities include developing and conducting surveys assessing the needs of university students, faculty and staff with disabilities, and working with UI collegiate and departmental facilities and services to ensure that the needs of people with disabilities are addressed and met in a timely fashion.

The CDA Achievement Awards ceremony is free and open to the public. Persons with disabilities are encouraged to attend this and other UI-sponsored events. If you are a person with a disability who requires an accommodation, or for more information, contact CDA co-chairs Carol Gruber at (319) 335-7599 or Shams Ghoneim at (319) 335-8252.
