Work on UI pedestrian bridge will close Highway 6 Tuesday, Aug. 29

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A portion of Highway 6 in Iowa City will be closed Tuesday, Aug. 29, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to allow for construction of a pedestrian overpass linking the University of Iowa health science campus and the UI International Center.

People who need to get to Veterans Affairs Medical Center will be allowed to use Highway 6 between the entrance to that facility and the intersection with Hawkins Drive and Rocky Shore Drive. However, all other traffic traveling east on Highway 6 will be detoured onto Hawkins Drive to Melrose and Grand Avenue.

Likewise, motorists traveling west on Highway 6 will be routed up Grand Avenue to Melrose and Hawkins Drive. Highway 6 will remain open for people who wish to take Newton Road and Riverside Drive, but it will be closed at the intersection with Riverside Drive.

During the road closing, construction workers will be setting precast concrete walkway planks on the piers that have been constructed on both sides of Highway 6 between Westlawn and the new Newton Road Parking Ramp on the south side of the highway, and the International Center on the north side of the highway.

The new pedestrian walkway will provide safe access between those two areas of campus. Currently, pedestrians have to cross railroad tracks and four-lanes of traffic on Highway 6.
