IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Joseph A. Buckwalter, M.D., head of the department of
orthopaedic surgery with University of Iowa Health Care, recently accepted
an invitation to become a member of the prestigious Royal College of Surgeons
Since its foundation in 1505, the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh
has continuously promoted the raising of standards in surgical practice through
education, training and examination.
It is one of the oldest surgical organizations in the world.
Buckwalter was awarded fellowship ad hominem in the college. The Royal College
of Surgeons of Edinburgh has nearly 13,000 fellows. All are distinguished
surgeons who are devoted to the maintenance and promotion of the highest standards
of surgical practice and surgical training.
"I am honored to receive this opportunity," Buckwalter said. "It
is humbling to think about all of the outstanding physicians who are members
of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and to be included in their
number is very gratifying."
Buckwalter attended the UI College of Medicine and completed a residency
in orthopaedic surgery at the UI Hospitals and Clinics. He became head of
the UI department of orthopaedic surgery in 1999.
