Russian health care entrepreneurs visit UI Family Care Center, Belle Plaine

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- University of Iowa Health Care's reputation for world-class family medicine recently lured two enterprising Russian health care managers to the UI Family Care Center, Belle Plaine, seeking tips on how to improve their own practices back home.

The two managers -- Oleg Ashirov, vice president for design and construction of Medicina health care enterprise in Moscow, and Sergei Rasskazov, M.D., director of the American Center for Family Medicine in Moscow -- visited Iowa under a long-term exchange program with the UI Department of Family Medicine.

"We have a fruitful partnership with Russia that is already seven years old," said Robin Paetzold, coordinator of international program development in the UI Department of Family Medicine. "This visit by our Medicina partners focused on the transfer of know-how relating to a local family medicine clinic setting. The UI Family Care Center, Belle Plaine, is an excellent model of such a setting, based on the best traditions in American family care delivery."

One crucial component of health care reform in Russia is the reorganization of family care delivery. The Russian visitors were interested in everything from the building's blueprints and interior design to the keeping of medical records and the role of the nurse. UI Family Care Center, Belle Plaine was chosen as a model family clinic to demonstrate the patient-oriented nature of U.S. health care delivery.

Medicina is one of the few prosperous private health care enterprises in Russia. It hosts the American Center for Family Medicine, a western-oriented provider of health care services. Both Medicina and the American Center for Family Medicine closely collaborate with the UI Department of Family Medicine and UI Family Care to provide up-to-date building design, medical equipment and quality patient services to a newly emerging category of health-conscious and quality-demanding Russian patients.

UI Family Care Center, Belle Plaine, is an affiliate of UI Health Care.
