'Sit-Out Against Rape' is planned

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- A "Sit-Out Against Rape" to challenge attitudes about sexual violence will take place in Iowa City Thursday, April 27 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. The sit-out will be staged in the Iowa City Pedestrian Mall near the intersection of College Street and Clinton Avenue. Planned by community members and sponsored by organizations including the Rape Victim Advocacy Program, Women's Resource and Action Center, UI Feminist Union, and University of Iowa Student Government, the event will protest incorrect perceptions about rape. Specifically, participants will communicate the message that alcohol is not an excuse for rape, that there is never an excuse for rape. Organizers say this protest is prompted by media coverage and lack of community response to sexual violence.

The sit-out will confront attitudes toward sexual violence and will raise awareness about rape. SOAR will include elements of readings and performances by members of the Graffiti Theater and a candlelight vigil.

For more information, or to arrange for any accommodations needed to participate, please contact Heather Light at 353-0690. Information is also available online at http://www.uiowa.edu/~uifu/soar.html.
