Minority enrollment continues to exceed Regents goal at University of Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Minority students account for 9.1 percent of the total enrollment at the University of Iowa this fall, marking the sixth consecutive year in which the UI's minority enrollment has exceeded the goal set by the Board of Regents, State of Iowa, of achieving a minority enrollment of at least 8.5 percent.

Total minority enrollment for the current academic year is 2,615, which is down slightly from the 1998 total of 2,663. There are 322 new minority freshmen enrolled in fall 1999 as compared to 325 in 1998.

"We are very pleased that our overall minority enrollment continues to exceed the Regents goal and though our total number is down slightly from last year, in fact that is due to improvements in the graduation rate of minority students. This year 534 minority students were awarded degrees; that's 68 more graduates than in the previous year, 1997-98," said Joe Coulter, UI associate provost for diversity and director of Opportunity at Iowa.

Minority enrollment at the UI has been climbing steadily since 1984, when the percentage of minority students was less than 5 percent. Minority enrollment hit 6 percent in 1988, passed the 7 percent mark in 1990, and the 8 percent mark in 1993. In 1994, minority enrollment grew to 9 percent, the first time the UI exceeded the Regents' goal.

The figures for minority enrollment do not include foreign students who are attending the UI on student visas. This year, there are 1,704 foreign students on campus. Last year's figure was 1,602.

"We will continue to strive for increases in the number of minority students by working hard to recruit, retain and graduate students. As new minority students join us, they enrich the learning environment of the campus for all of us," Coulter added.
