UI Museum of Natural History sponsors Sept. 19 field
IOWA CITY, Iowa The University of Iowa Museum
of Natural History, in cooperation with the Prairie States Mushroom Club,
will sponsor a field trip on mushroom hunting beginning at 10 a.m. Sunday,
Sept. 19 at Palisades-Kepler State Park. Participants are asked to meet at
the park entrance in the first shelter on the left, rain or shine.
The field trip, part of the Museum's "Afternoon With
a Scientist" public education and lecture series, will be led by Dean Abel,
co-author of "A Guide to Kansas Mushrooms," and Damien Pieper, a member of
the North American Mycological Association (NAMA), the Prairie States Mushroom
Club and the Iowa Native Plants Society.
Field trip participants are advised to wear sturdy
shoes for hiking, long pants, a long-sleeved shirt, and a hat. Insect repellent,
water, a paper bag for collecting specimens and a hand-lens for identification
are recommended. The two-hour foray will be followed by an identification
session. Participants who plan to stay for the afternoon hike should bring
a sack lunch.
Abel, who heads the NAMA photography committee and
directs the annual NAMA photo contest, also will present an Oct. 3 program
in the UI Museum of Natural History featuring winning photos from the 1999
