IOWA CITY, Iowa -- (Name) of (hometown) is a member of the 1999-2000 Hawkeye Marching Band at the University of Iowa. (Name) is a (class standing) at the UI and plays the (instrument) with the band.

The band performs under director Kevin Kastens. Under his direction, the band puts more than 200 students on the field for its performances. They perform at pre-game and half time of all Hawkeye home football games and travel to at least one away game each fall.

The group's next performance will be at the Chicago Bears-Philadelphia Eagles football game at Soldier Field in Chicago, Sunday, Oct. 17. Their next appearance at a UI game will be the Homecoming game against Indiana Oct. 23, preceded by the annual Homecoming Parade in Iowa City Friday evening, Oct. 22.

They will also perform at the UI School of Music's annual Band Extravaganza at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 16 and 17 in Hancher Auditorium on the UI campus. A celebration of bands and band music, the Band Extravaganza features the top groups in the UI band department: the Symphony Band, the Johnson County Landmark jazz band and the Hawkeye Marching Band.

As always, the Hawkeye Marching Band promises to provide lots of fun and surprises at the concert. The band will play selections from the 1999 football-season half-time shows, including the traditional band skits and a performance by the drum line, and concluding with the traditional UI songs "On Iowa" and the "Iowa Fight Song."

Before coming to the UI in 1998, Kastens served five years at the University of Missouri, where he directed the marching band, Marching Mizzou, and the pep band for men's basketball games, Mini Mizzou. In addition, he was coordinator of sports band activities and conductor of the Symphonic Band, and taught courses in instrumental and marching band techniques. In 1996 the members of the Missouri Marching Band elected Kastens to the Marching Mizzou Hall of Fame, the first director to be so honored.

At the UI Kastens directs the Hawkeye Marching Band and the Concert Band, teaches band arranging and marching band techniques, and is the director of the All-State Music Camp.

Before moving to Missouri Kastens was assistant director of bands at Indiana University (1987-93) and taught high school bands in Wheeling (1978-87) and Arlington Heights (1977-78), Ill. At Indiana he was the assistant director of the Marching Hundred and taught several music education courses, including literature for school bands, marching band techniques, and instrumental and choral music arranging.

Kastens has written articles for the Music Educators Journal and other professional publications. He assisted in the beta testing and development of "Drill Quest," a marching band drill-writing software program, and he continues to be involved in the improvement of the program and the development of new features. He has presented workshops and clinics on marching band techniques and computer drill design and appeared as guest conductor at band clinics throughout the Midwest and Canada.
