Taylor 2 residency leads up to Oct. 15-16 Paul Taylor world premiere in Hancher

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- In anticipation of the Millennium Festival world premiere of choreographer Paul Taylor's "Arabesque" Oct. 15-16 in Hancher Auditorium, the young Taylor 2 dance company will be in residence at the University of Iowa Oct. 12-15.

The residency, part of Hancher's three-year Iowa Network Project funded by the Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Fund, will include workshops and performances in Iowa City, Coralville and Cedar Rapids.

Through the Network Project, Taylor 2 -- a small company of young dancers who perform the repertoire of Taylor, one of the world's most honored modern-dance choreographers -- will also complete residencies this season in Decorah, Pella and Burlington.

UI residency activities open to the public free of charge include:

-- a mini-performance noon to 12:50 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, in the Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union;

-- a movement workshop at 4 p.m. Oct. 12 in the IMU Main Lounge;

-- a mini-performance and workshop at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 13, in the Cedar Rapids Public Library; and

-- an outdoor demonstration at noon Thursday, Oct. 14, in the Iowa City downtown plaza (in case of rain the demonstration will be inside the Old Capitol Center).

During their time at the UI, the Taylor 2 dancers will also present a Stage Door performance for school groups, Oct. 13 in Hancher; conduct a workshop at Longfellow Elementary School in Iowa City; offer a family movement workshop Oct. 14, at the Dance of Iowa studio in Coralville; and lead a dance teachers' workshop Oct. 15 in the Dance of Iowa studio in Iowa City.

The performances of the main Paul Taylor Dance Company will be at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Oct. 15 and 16. Tickets for those performances are available from the Hancher box office, at (319) 335-1160, or toll-free within Iowa and western Illinois, 1-800-HANCHER.
