Event to celebrate Latino Heritage Month

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- In celebration of Latino Heritage Month, the University of Iowa Opportunity at Iowa program will sponsor presentations on ancient poetry and the archaeology of cities beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 6 in the Lucas-Dodge Room of the Iowa Memorial Union.

Dr. John García, assistant professor in the UI Department of Classics, will present "Aquí, Junto al Mar Latino: Ancient Poetry and the Latino Experience." The ancient poetry of Greece and Rome is a distant but important part of the Latino heritage. García will discuss ways of exploring the paths of song that connect people to the past.

Following García's talk, Dr. Glenn Storey, assistant professor in the UI Department of Classics, will present "The Archaeology of Cities." Storey will use a slide show to discuss how the archaeology of cities in Mexico and Central America has informed us about new ways of looking at cities in Europe.

Opportunity at Iowa, a program of the UI Office of the Provost, coordinates university-wide efforts to create and maintain campus diversity. For more information about Opportunity at Iowa or this event, call Adele Rodriguez, Opportunity at Iowa, at (319) 335-3555 or e-mail to:
