8th Annual Snowflake Family Festival to be held at Museum of Art

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Museum of Art will present the eighth annual "Snowflake Family Festival," an afternoon of art, music, hands-on activities and refreshments for the entire family, from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5. All events during the festival are open to the public free of charge.

The afternoon's entertainment will begin with a performance by the Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre, a past festival favorite, at 1 p.m. At 2 p.m. the Chamber Singers of Iowa City will perform "Brother Heinrich's Christmas" by John Rutter, "Ceremony of Carols" by Benjamin Britten and a medley of sing-along songs. "Jessica Claus" will tell "Stories from the North Pole" at 3 p.m., and the afternoon's performances will conclude with a concert given by students of the Preucil School of Music at 3:30 p.m.

From noon to 4 p.m. visitors, parents, children and families may participate in "Make a Snowflake." Cookies and punch will be served throughout the day.

The UI Museum of the Art's "Snowflake Family Festival" is planned and coordinated by Emily Vermilion, curator of education.

"We look forward every year to sharing this delightful afternoon with the community," she says. "We hope that families and friends will join us in the festivities." She invites parents and children to "step inside the warmth of the museum's winter wonderland."

Exhibitions on view in the museum during the festival will include "Different Stokes: International Woodfire Ceramics," "Shaping Earth: African Vessels," and the recently extended "Art is Life/Life is Art: The Graphic Work of Dieter Roth." Two recently opened exhibitions are "Old Master Drawings from the Permanent Collection" and "Circa 1900: Art at the Turn of the Century."

Museum staff and volunteers will be stationed throughout the museum to welcome visitors. Seating may be limited for performances.

The Snowflake Family Festival is sponsored by the Hills Bank and Trust Company.

The UI Museum of Art is located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots across from the museum on Riverside Drive and just north of the museum.
