UI Hancher box office has holiday gift certificates for arts lovers

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Hancher Auditorium box office at the University of Iowa is prepared for the holidays, with gift certificates and tickets packaged in festive envelopes for the lovers of music, theater and dance on anyone's gift list. But because the box office will close at the end of the business day Dec. 18 for the UI winter break, you can't wait until the last minute!

Hancher gift certificates, available in multiples of $5, may be redeemed during the next year for tickets to any of the UI performances handled by the Hancher box office. This includes not only the internationally renowned music, theater and dance artists presented by the auditorium -- including events in the season-spanning millennium festival -- but also all the Mainstage productions of University Theatres, major productions of UI Opera Theater and the Old Gold Singers, the UI Dance Company's annual Dance Gala and the UI Band Extravaganza.

For gift-givers who know exactly what performances their recipients have been dreaming about, the box office will package tickets to specific events during the remainder of the 1999-2000 season. This includes Hancher's Millennium Eve celebration, featuring the group that carries on the tradition of an Iowa legend, the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Among the Hancher events in the spring of 2000 that promise to be popular choices are the returns of "Stomp" and "Les Miserables," cellist Yo-Yo Ma, the Memphis R&B Review, "The Music of Andrew Lloyd Webber," and world premieres by the Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company, the Australian Chamber Orchestra with UI alumnus David Lang's Bang on a Can, the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, the Ethos Percussion Group and the Kronos Quartet with soprano Dawn Upshaw.

Holiday gift certificates or tickets from the Hancher box office may be provided to the purchaser or sent directly to the intended recipient. The box office will be open Dec. 27-31 for Millennium Eve ticket sales.

Hancher box office hours are 10 a.m.-5:30 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturdays. From the local calling area or outside Iowa, dial (319) 335-1160. Long distance within Iowa and western Illinois is toll-free, 1-800-HANCHER. Fax to (319) 353-2284. Orders may be charged to VISA, MasterCard or American Express. UI students may charge their purchases to their university bills, and UI faculty and staff may select the option of payroll deduction. If your gift recipient has special needs for access, seating and auxiliary services, dial (319) 335-1158. This number will be answered by box office personnel prepared to offer assistance with handicapped parking, wheelchair access and seating, hearing augmentation and other services.
