UI associate provost, nursing dean recognized
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Kathleen Buckwalter, Ph.D., professor
of nursing at the University of Iowa, received the Midwest Nursing Research
Society's 1999 Distinguished Contribution to Research award at the organization's
annual conference in April.
The award honors individuals whose research has "enhanced
the science and practice of nursing." Buckwalter has investigated and published
extensively on geriatric and psychiatric nursing issues. Buckwalter also serves
as the UI associate provost for health sciences.
Melanie Dreher, Ph.D., professor and dean of the College
of Nursing, was named in April to the National Institutes of Health's Council
of Public Representatives. The new body will serve in an advisory capacity
to the NIH director and is intended to increase public awareness of and support
for NIH programs. Dreher came to the UI in 1997, and before that was dean
of nursing at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She is past president
of Sigma Theta Tau International, a professional society for nurses with more
than 120,000 members.
