National Poetry Month activities at UI include Warren, Hass, Ashbery readings
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- April is National Poetry Month, and the University of
Iowa is celebrating with a schedule of poetry events including readings by
Rosanna Warren, a new chancellor of the Academy of American Poets; former
U.S. Poet Laureate Robert Hass; and John Ashbery, whose 18 books of poetry
have been honored with the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award and the
National Book Critics Circle Award.
The schedule of April poetry events includes:
-- a reading by Susan Wheeler at 8 p.m. Friday, April 2 in the Tippie Auditorium
of the UI Pappajohn Business Administration Building (PBAB);
-- a "Live from Prairie Lights" reading by Catherine Webster at 8 p.m. Tuesday,
April 6 at Prairie Lights in downtown Iowa City, broadcast live by UI radio
-- a reading by Rosanna Warren at 8 p.m. Friday, April 9 in Tippie Auditorium,
-- a reading by Robert Hass at 8 p.m. Friday, April 16 in Shambaugh Auditorium
of the UI Main Library; and
-- a reading by John Ashbery at 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 20 in Shambaugh Auditorium.
Wheeler's new volume is "Smokes." She is also the author of "Bag 'o' Diamonds,"
which received the Norma Farber First Book Award from the Poetry Society of
America and was short-listed for the Los Angeles Times Book Award in Poetry.
She has been the recipient of a Pushcart Prize and two fellowships from the
New York Foundation for the Arts.
Webster compiled an anthology of farm-related poetry, "Over this Soil."
Hass was a visiting faculty member in the UI Writers' Workshop when he was
tapped by the Library of Congress as the Poet Laureate of the United States.
