UI Hygienic Laboratory director to appear on ABC World News Tonight
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Mary J.R. Gilchrist, Ph.D., director of the University
of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory, is expected to appear tonight (Thursday, Feb.
25) on ABC's "World News Tonight" with Peter Jennings.
Gilchrist was interviewed by an ABC news crew about her Thursday morning
testimony before the U.S. Senate Public Health Subcommittee on antibiotic
resistant bacteria. In the interview Gilchrist discussed why many bacteria
are becoming resistant to antibiotics and how to prevent the problem from

In her testimony Gilchrist talked about the antibiotic resistant bacteria
tracking programs in place and the various information systems that public
health laboratories are using. She also discussed the success of the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention's Emerging Infectious Disease Program
and advocated for continued and increased funding of that initiative.
