UI to host international women's health conference
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- "Crossing Borders into the 21st Century,"
an international women's health conference, will be Monday, March 1 in
the Iowa Memorial Union on the University of Iowa campus.
The conference will focus on multidisciplinary views of global women's
health issues, while providing participants the knowledge to expand research
and clinical initiatives in gender specific medicine and international
and interdisciplinary research. The conference is designed for researchers,
teachers, health care practitioners and students with an interest in international
and interdisciplinary women's health issues.
Five breakout sessions on the topics of clinical research, building
women's health programs, working with non-dominant populations, alternative
medicine and cultural and political factors of international projects will
be conducted by UI faculty members. UI President Mary Sue Coleman will
deliver the keynote address. The featured speaker for the event is Vivian
Pinn, director for women's health at the National Institutes of Health.
The UI conference is co-sponsored by the Office of the Provost, the
colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing and Pharmacy, the Environmental
Health Sciences Research Center, International Programs, Staff Council,
UI Work Life Services, the UI Hospitals and Clinics, and the Women in Science
and Engineering (WISE) Program. Pfizer Inc. also contributed an unrestricted
educational grant for the conference.
