UI to test steam piping Wednesday, Dec. 29
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa will
be blowing off steam Wednesday morning, Dec. 29. But it's for a good cause:
To test the low pressure steam piping that serves the Seamans Center for the
Engineering Arts and Sciences, the home of the UI College of Engineering.
There will be at least three different releases of
steam, each lasting about 30 minutes, between 9 a.m. and noon. The length
of the steam releases will allow for the opening and closing of valves and
about 10 minutes at full pressure.
A safety engineer will be on site to conduct noise
tests, but UI officials do not expect the noise level to exceed 85 decibels.
The noise level will be about the same as the UI Power Plant steam whistle
that blows each day at 8 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 5 p.m.
