UI faculty, German guest artist will present chamber music concert Sept. 10

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Members of the string faculty of the University of Iowa School of Music will be joined by guest artist Fulbert Slenzcka, principal cellist of the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein (German opera on the Rhine) in Duisburg/Dusseldorf, Germany for a recital of chamber music at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10 in Clapp Recital Hall on the UI campus.

The joint faculty-guest recital will be free and open to the public.

The first half of the program will consist of three sets of duos for violin and cello, by Frederico Fiorillo, Reinhold Gliere and Bohuslav Martinu, performed by Slenzcka with UI faculty member Annette-Barbara Vogel. After intermission, Vogel and Slenzcka will join forces with other UI string faculty members -- violinist Amy Appold, violist Christine Rutledge and cellist Charles Wendt -- to perform the String Quintet in C major, D. 956, of Franz Schubert.

Written in 1828, just two months before the composer's death, the C-major String Quintet is considered one of Schubert's greatest pieces of chamber music. Musical scholar William Mann called it Schubert's "masterpiece, and perhaps the greatest of all his works in range of emotion, quality of material and formal perfection." And musicologist Homer Ulirch commented, "In nobility of conception, beauty of melody and variety of mood it is without equal."

Like Schubert's Great C major Symphony, also completed in the last year of the composer's life, the C major Quintet was virtually unknown until its first public performance many years after Schubert's death. Also like the symphony, the quintet was composed on a large scale, with four movements that expand the content and time span of the work well beyond the classical norm.

The scoring of the quintet, with string quartet plus cello, was also unusual at the time, since earlier quintets generally used an added viola. The additional cello provides much deeper and richer sonorities, and Schubert takes advantage of this opportunity throughout the quintet.

A native of Heidelberg, Germany, Slenzcka received an Artist Diploma from Indiana University, where he studied with the internationally acclaimed cellist Janos Starker. He has won prizes in competitions in both Germany and the United States and has been awarded scholarships from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), the Cultural Foundation of Industry in Germany and from Indiana University. In addition to performing with the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Slenzcka pursues an active career as soloist and recitalist throughout Germany and Western Europe, and he has recorded for most of the major German radio and television stations.

Vogel joined the UI faculty in 1999. She has performed extensively in the United States, Canada, Europe and Asia, playing as a soloist with orchestra, a solo recitalist and chamber musician. She has appeared at the Aspen, Ravinia, Chautauqua, Menuhin and Schleswig-Holstein festivals, among others. She has appeared on radio and television broadcasts in Europe and the United States, and has recorded CDs of music by Beethoven, Ravel, Smetana, Shostakovich and Richard Strauss. Prior to her appointment at the UI, Vogel taught at the Folkwang Hochschule Essen in Germany. She has taught master classes in Europe, the United States and Asia, and was artist in residence at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where she taught on the faculty and was a member of the Monticello Trio.

Appold is first violinist of the Maia Quartet, the string-quartet-in-residence at the UI School of Music. A founding member of the quartet, Appold studied at the Cleveland Institute of Music, the Peabody Conservatory and the Juilliard School, where she was a teaching assistant to Robert Mann, founder and first violinist of the famed Juilliard String Quartet. She has also played in the Youngstown (Ohio) Symphony, the Canton Symphony and the Isabella Gardner Museum Chamber Orchestra, and most recently was concertmaster of the Acadiana Symphony Orchestra in Louisiana.

Rutledge joined the UI faculty in the fall of 1998. She had previously been a faculty member at Notre Dame University, where she also played with the Notre Dame String Trio. She has appeared as soloist, chamber musician and orchestral player throughout the United States and abroad. She performs as a member of the Fontana Chamber Music Festival ensemble. Her performances and recordings with the Notre Dame String Trio have earned glowing reviews from "The Strad," "Fanfare" and other music publications. She has performed the standard viola repertoire, her own transcriptions of Baroque works, several lesser-known works for viola, and new works that were written specifically for her.

Wendt, an active soloist and chamber musician, joined the faculty of the UI School of Music in 1966. He has appeared as soloist with the Atlanta, Richmond, Pittsburgh, Cedar Rapids and Waterloo symphony orchestras. Before coming to the UI, he was assistant first cellist with the Pittsburgh Symphony and principal cellist of the Santa Fe Opera. He has been cellist of the Stradivari Quartet and is principal cellist with the Quad-City Symphony. For three summers he was director of chamber music for the Ameropa Chamber Music Festival in Prague, Czech Republic, and he has recently given master classes at the Meadowmount School of Music in New York.
