'Authors and Thinkers' exhibition will open at the UI Museum of Art Sept.11

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Museum of Art will house an exhibition of works by Buzz Spector, a visiting artist at the UI School of Art and Art History, from Sept. 11 through Nov. 7. The exhibition, "Buzz Spector: Authors and Thinkers," will be shown in the museum's South River Gallery.

Spector, who is professor and chair of the painting program at the School of Art and Design of the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, will be a visiting artist for printmaking at the School of Art and Art History from Sept 13-15. He will present several public lectures during his visit to the UI:

At 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, as part of the opening of the museum's fall exhibition schedule, he will conduct a gallery tour of "Art is Life/ Life is Art: The Graphic Work of Dieter Roth," one of the museum's fall exhibitions. As part of that tour, Spector will speak on "The Body and the Archive."

At 8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13, Spector will speak on his own work in Room E109 of the UI Art Building. There will be an accompanying slide presentation.

Spector also contributed to the exhibition catalogue for "Art is Life/ Life is Art: The Graphic Work of Dieter Roth," which is available for purchase in the museum.

Spector is the author of "The Book Maker's Desire," a collection of critical essays on the book arts, as well as a widely shown artist and writer. He has issued a number of artist's books and editions since the mid-1970s. He makes frequent use of the book in his work, incorporating books as both subject and object. His work is concerned with relationships among public history, individual memory and perception.

Spector's lecture Sept. 12 at the Museum of Art is sponsored by the UI Center for the Book.

The UI Museum of Art, located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission is free. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots across from the museum on Riverside Drive and just north of the museum.
