Health Behavior Conference works to network interdisciplinary activities

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa's inaugural Health Behavior Conference, initiated through the efforts of several on-campus behavioral scientists, will be held at the Iowa Memorial Union Monday, May 17.

The conference, open to all UI interested faculty, research scientists and post-graduate fellows, will strive to enhance communication regarding health behavior research and education on campus.

"One challenge for the interdisciplinary aspect of health behavior research is that the people are partitioned in different departments," said Bernard Sorofman, associate professor in the UI College of Pharmacy and co-organizer of the event. "This partitioning makes it difficult for people to find each other. The conference will allow us to network and learn about each other's activities in an effort to develop long-term research relationships."

Created in response to the need for more health behavior research, the conference looks to integrate a critical mass of faculty on issues related to behavioral science.

"We need to explore the possibility of working with the Department of Community Health and Behavioral Science in the new UI College of Public Health so as not to duplicate work," said Henrietta Logan, professor of preventive and community dentistry in the UI dental college and co-organizer of the conference. "This way, we can increase overall productivity and ability to compete for external funding."

To register or obtain additional information on the event, send your name, department address, and three keywords referencing your interests in health behavior to Bernard Sorofman at, or call him at 335-8838.
