UI CAMPUS NOTES -- IOWA CENTER FOR THE ARTS

GALLERY SERIES PLAYS APRIL 22-25 -- The University Theatres Gallery series will present two undergraduate honors projects April 22-25 in Theatre B of the University of Iowa Theatre Building. "Scooter Thomas Makes it to the Top of the World" by Peter Parnell will be performed at 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday, April 22-23, and "Toyer" by Gardner McKay will be performed at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 24 and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 25.

In the comedy "Scooter Thomas" a man responds to the death of a friend by delving into old issues of his youth -- confronting grief, growing up and growing apart.

"Toyer" is a contemporary play set in Los Angeles. This psychological thriller follows the complications when a young woman invites into her home a man who fixed her car.

"Scooter Thomas" is directed by undergraduate theater arts student Havilah Meinel with sound design by Marshall Guthrie.

Undergraduate Emily Drach is the director of "Toyer." Tim Gavin is the lighting designer for both shows.

Admission to each show will be $5 ($3 for UI students, senior citizens and youth) at the door.

SPACE/PLACE DANCE CONCERT APRIL 23-24 -- The University of Iowa dance department will spotlight its best new student choreography in the spring Space/Place Concert at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24 in the Space/Place Theatre of UI North Hall.

The works for the concert are selected by an adjudication panel from among submissions by students in the department. The concert typically features a wide variety of styles, including ballet, contemporary dance and jazz.

Admission will be $5 ($4 for UI students, senior citizens and youth) at the door.

CODELL READS APRIL 26 -- Fifth-grade teacher Esme Raji Codell will read from her new book "Educating Esme: Diary of a Teacher's First Year" at 8 p.m. Monday, April 26 at Prairie Lights bookstore, 15 S. Dubuque St. in downtown Iowa City. The reading is free and open to the public.

The reading will be broadcast live on radio stations WSUI AM 910 and WOI AM 640 as part of the "Live from Prairie Lights" series produced by University of Iowa radio station WSUI.

"'Educating Esme' is that exceptional education book about an even more exceptional teacher," Kirkus Reviews said. Herbert Kohl, author of "36 Children," says Codell is "a teacher I'd hire tomorrow. There is nothing the profession needs more than such creative, intelligent, combative and loving teachers."

Codell is a teacher and children's literature specialist at an elementary school in Chicago.

Her public radio feature based on the diary was awarded First Prize for National Education Reporting from the Education Writers Association. She is also a recipient of the Dr. Peggy Williams Award for outstanding new teacher in the field of Reading and Language Arts, given by the Chicago chapter of the International Reading Association.

MUSIC LECTURE APRIL 30 -- Nancy Rogers, a visiting instructor in music theory at the University of Iowa School of Music, will present a lecture, "What's in a Name? The Effect of Labels on Musical Memory," at 1:30 p.m. Friday, April 30 in Room 1027 of the UI Voxman Music Building.

Rogers' lecture, which is part of the Colloquium series sponsored by the musicology and music theory areas of the UI School of Music, will be free and open to the public.

Rogers said her lecture is about the ways that we manage to remember musical sounds. This is important to listeners, she said, because our ability to remember sounds is critical to our understanding of the music we hear.

"Because music exists in time, musical understanding relies heavily upon memory," she explained. "Our musical memory enables us, among other things, to recognize a recurring theme, to notice that this theme has moved from the violins to the horns, to realize that the music has returned to the original key, and so forth.

"However, a listener does not necessarily remember a series of sounds corresponding to all previously heard music. Instead, in my lecture I will present experimental results that suggest that among trained musicians, verbal encoding of music is common."

Rogers has undergraduate degrees from Northwestern University and a master’s degree in music theory from the University of Michigan. She is completing a doctorate in theory from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.

Rogers has won several awards for her teaching, including the Edward Peck Curtis Award at Eastman, a university-wide award for teaching by a graduate student. She has also received a Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities, an international award for students planning a career teaching in the humanities. Prior to her appointment at the UI, she taught at Northwestern and the Eastman School.

ART OF THE MONTH, MAY 1 -- Hee-Young Kim and Leanne Gilbertson, graduate students in the University of Iowa's School of Art and Art History, will present "A Consideration of the East/West Cultural Exchange at Mid-Century" at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 1 in the UI Museum of Art.

This presentation is the fourth and final session in the museum's four-part mini-course, Art of the Month. This semester's course, "Cultural Connections in Three Dimensions from the UI Museum of Art Permanent Collection," has highlighted selected works from the museum's permanent collection of sculptural objects and considered their connections to other art forms and ideas from a variety of cultures.

Participation in the course is open to the public free of charge. New participants are welcome at each Art of the Month session.

Kim said, "Considering the works of Franz Kline and Isamu Noguchi, among others from the museum's permanent collection, Leanne and I will critically examine the impact of Eastern ideas and philosophy on the discourse of mid-century American art."

The UI Museum of Art, located on North Riverside Drive in Iowa City, is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays. Admission is free. Public metered parking is available in UI parking lots across from the museum on Riverside Drive and just north of the museum.
