UI Homecoming week activities set for Oct. 4 - 10

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The University of Iowa Student Government and Homecoming Council have announced this year's theme, "There's a Little Gold in Everyone," and a weeklong schedule of Homecoming activities from Sunday, Oct. 4 to Saturday, Oct. 10.

The activities culminate with the 87th annual fall football classic with the UI hosting Northwestern University, at 1:05 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at Kinnick Stadium.

The activities are:

Sunday, Oct. 4

-- 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., 3-on-3 Homecoming Hoops Basketball Tournament, Main Deck, UI Field House

-- 4 p.m., Homecoming Court announcement, R. Wayne Richey Ballroom, Iowa Memorial Union

Monday, Oct. 5

-- 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., "Rolling Stone Rock and Roll Bowl," outdoor festival featuring rock 'n' roll era music, Hubbard Field, near the Iowa Memorial Union. Rain location: Terrace Lobby, Iowa Memorial Union

-- 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Judging of downtown business windows painted by student organizations

-- Special Homecoming insert available in The Daily Iowan

Tuesday, Oct. 6

-- 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., "Havoc at Hubbard," obstacle course, Hubbard Field, near the Iowa Memorial Union

Wednesday, Oct. 7

-- 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., "Sports Night," UI athletes and UI mascot available to meet with the community at Old Capitol Mall, Iowa City

Thursday, Oct. 8

-- 8 p.m., "Iowa Shout," variety show performed by UI student organizations, Main Lounge of the Iowa Memorial Union

Friday, Oct. 9

-- 6:15 p.m., Homecoming Parade, parade route begins at the corner of Gilbert and Washington streets, winds through Clinton, Jefferson and Dubuque streets, and ends on Iowa Avenue.

Friday, Oct. 9

-- Pep Rally immediately following parade, on the west lawn of the Pentacrest, UI Old Capitol

-- Homecoming king and queen will be announced at pep rally; (Rain location: second floor ballroom, Iowa Memorial Union)

-- 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Homecoming celebration, second floor ballroom, Iowa Memorial Union, with an open house featuring children's entertainment and free refreshments

-- 9 p.m., Fireworks Extravaganza, immediately following pep rally, viewing on west lawn of the Pentacrest, UI Old Capitol

-- 10 p.m., concert, the Freddy Jones Band, Iowa Memorial Union. Tickets are $10 per person

Saturday, Oct. 10

-- 1:05 p.m., Northwestern University versus Iowa, Kinnick Stadium

Events ongoing throughout Oct. 5 ­ 10

-- Homecoming history display, first floor, Iowa Memorial Union, a portrayal of Homecoming throughout UI history

-- UI student organizations will decorate the windows of various downtown Iowa City businesses

-- Iowa Corn Monument, located on the UI Pentacrest, a traditional display made of corn and created by the Associated Students of Engineering

--Children's Art Display, Old Capitol Mall, depicts UI mascot Herky the Hawkeye as drawn by area children. Winners, whose art is selected from three age categories, will be announced at Sports Night.
