UIHC sponsors seminar on cataracts, macular degeneration
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Area residents are invited to a free seminar discussing
cataracts and macular degeneration Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
at the Hampton/Clarion Conference Center in Coralville. The seminar is
sponsored by University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) as part of
its Centennial celebration.
Health for Your Lifetime: New Technologies to Fight Old Diseases--Macular
Degeneration and Cataracts is the fourth in a series of educational
seminars planned this year. The seminar will feature three University
of Iowa ophthalmologists: Drs. Thomas Weingeist, Edwin Stone and Thomas
Weingeist, professor and head of ophthalmology and visual sciences,
will introduce the program with a brief description of cataracts and macular
Stone will focus on the latest advances in treatment and therapy for
macular degeneration, which refers to a group of disorders that can affect
the central vision and is the most common cause of legal blindness in developed
countries. It usually affects patients over age 65.
Oetting will discuss cataracts and new discoveries that have been made
in the treatment of cataracts.
