Stepping Up door hanger project aims at improving neighborhood relations
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Stepping Up is going door to door in an effort to
improve relations in neighborhoods shared by off-campus University of Iowa
students and other community residents.
In an effort to provide accurate and current information to students
and residents near campus, volunteers from Stepping Up are distributing
door hangers that include information on Iowa City laws relating to parties,
underage drinking, fake IDs and pets as well as information on tenant-landlord
The door hanger includes a letter signed by Iowa City Mayor Ernie Lehman
and UI Vice President for Student Services Phillip E. Jones, who are both
members of the Stepping Up Executive Committee.
"Your neighbors, students and long-term residents alike, look forward
to your active participation in our community," the letter states.
" As a member of this community, you have the responsibility of making
choices that affect all of us. These choices range from finding the right
apartment to keeping a pet or having a party. The Stepping Up Project is
a coalition that aims to reduce problem drinking, its accompanying negative
effects on others and reinforce the values of a living and learning community."
" With the beginning of another academic year, we want to encourage
students and long-term residents alike to renew our commitment to make
this community a safe and enjoyable one for all of its residents. The Stepping
Up Project, citizens of Iowa City/Coralville, students, faculty and administrators
of the university seek your help and your active participation in this
common effort. Working together we can accomplish our basic goals."
The door hanger includes brochures from the UI Tenant/Landlord Association,
The Coralville/Iowa City Animal Shelter, Student Legal Services, and the
UI Department of Public Safety.
