UI CAMPUS NOTES -- IOWA CENTER FOR THE ARTS

IWP PANEL DISCUSSION SERIES SEPT. 9 -- The University of Iowa International Writing Program will present a panel discussion titled "Book and Powerbook: Writing and Technology" at 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 9 in the English/Philosophy building on the UI campus. The discussion is free and open to the public.

The panel, which is comprised of four writers from four countries, will examine how new technology has mediated communication, yet also created isolation across cultures. They will explore technology's impact on contemporary writing, the fragmentation and recombination of genres (hypertext, computer-generated poetry), and ways in which composing on the word processor has altered the quality, texture, length and other characteristics of the literary text.

Panel members will be Anastasia Sergeyevna Gosteva of Russia, Emil Zopfi of Switzerland, Phan Trieu Hai of Vietnam and Andras Petocz of Hungary.

The IWP is a unique residency program, which each fall assembles a community of established writers from all parts of the globe. This fall 19 writers from 18 countries will spend three months at the UI.
