UI International Writing Program participants discuss 'Images of
America' Nov. 11
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Participants in the University of Iowa International
Writing Program (IWP) will present a free panel discussion on impressions
of American cultural identity at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 11 in the lounge
of the UI International Center.
Titled "Images of America," the discussion will examine images
abroad of popular American culture, "high" culture and literary
achievements, as well as the insights that the writers have derived from
their residency this fall at the UI and their travels throughout the country.
Panel members include Phan Trieu Hai of Vietnam, Emil Zopfi of Switzerland,
German Carrasco of Chile, Fabian Casas of Argentina and Ed Folsom of the
Casas is a permanent contributor to the cultural section of Argentina's
largest daily newspaper, Clarin, and is editor of the literary supplement.
His first volume of poems, "Tuca," was chosen as the Poetry Book
of the Year by Diario de Poesia en Argentina. Casas received first prize
from the Argentina Authors' Society in 1992 and first prize from Columbia
Prometeo Foundation in 1994.
Carrasco is the author of "Brindis," which received a prize
in the House of the Americas Contest in Cuba. His works have also appeared
in various anthologies, two publications from the University of Chile and
the volume "Perrrera Arte."
Zopfi, a literary hero in Switzerland, has published seven novels, most
recently "Kilchenstock, Der Bergstruz in den Kopfen." He is also
the author of nine radio plays, and his awards include the Cultural and
Literary Award from the Swiss Alpine Club, Canton and the City Award of
Hai won the award for story of the year from Youth Magazine for his
most recent collection of short stories, "A Man Lying on the Roof."
He is the author of three other collections of short fiction. Many of his
stories have been translated into English.
The IWP has brought to Iowa 19 established writers from 18 countries
for a three-month residency at the UI.
