Students welcome moms and dads to annual UI Parents Weekend

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Parents of University of Iowa students will celebrate "Ten Years of Hawkeye Family Tradition" this weekend at the UI Alumni Association's Parents Weekend Oct. 23-25.

More than 2,600 parents, students, and family members will attend a variety of activities starting Friday, Oct. 23 with a reception at the Old Capitol to meet UI President Mary Sue Coleman. Several building tours are also scheduled, including the new Levitt Center for University Advancement, UI Hospitals and Clinics, plus business, engineering, and athletics facilities.

On Saturday, Oct. 24 visitors may attend a "Tailgating for the Mind" lecture "Art and Life in Africa CDROM Project: Teaching Multiculturalism with Computers" at 9 a.m. in Schaffer Hall.

Parents and families can enjoy a tailgate party at the Recreation Building at 10 a.m. before they cheer on the Hawkeyes during the 2:30 p.m. football game against Wisconsin at Kinnick Stadium.

At 11:15 a.m. Saturday, Parents Weekend participants can see the first public appearance of the 1998 Iowa men's basketball team at the Black and Gold Basketball Blowout at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

Theater excursions to "Patsy" at Hancher Auditorium and "Beyond Therapy" at the Riverside Theatre are also planned, as well as shopping trips to downtown Iowa City and Coral Ridge Mall. Comedian Rob Weinstein will also perform at 9 p.m. Saturday in the Wheelroom at the Iowa Memorial Union.

The Student Alumni Ambassadors who organized the weekend's activities are Kim Furgason, a junior pharmacy student from Fridley, Minn., and Mitzi Miller, a senior journalism student from Atlantic, Iowa.
