Rhetoric seminar details 19th century countries' sovereignty efforts
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Project on the Rhetoric of Inquiry (POROI) will
host a seminar on the sovereignty efforts of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Guam, the
Philippines, and Hawaii in the late 19th century and two University of
Iowa professors' works on the topic. The seminar will be Thursday, Oct.
15 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Brewery Square, 107 North Linn Street
in Iowa City.
The POROI seminar, "Interdisciplinary Conversations When
and Why do they Work, Afterthoughts on the 1998 Obermann Summer Research
Seminar," will be led by UI professors Jane Desmond, associate professor
of American studies and women's studies, and Virginia Dominguez, professor
of anthropology and director of the Center for International and Comparative
Desmond and Dominguez presented a paper on the countries' sovereignty
efforts at the faculty seminar this past June. The two are collaborating
on a larger, first-of-its-kind work on the subject, which will include
research by scholars from the noted countries.
