UI Small Business Development Center offers advice for entrepreneurs

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Thinking of starting your own business? The University of Iowa Small Business Development Center (SBDC) can help with a series of seminars designed to help entrepreneurs be successful in their ventures.

The SBDC's Smart Start seminars are taught by experienced business counselors who lead participants through the progression of starting a business. During the two-hour session, the presenter covers practical information on business topics, including:
* How to minimize risk through planning and analysis
* Examining business strength and competitive advantages
* Planning and understanding the entire picture of a business
* Discussing required financial information with investors and bankers
* Basic legal and regulatory responsibilities, such as licenses, taxes and legal structure

All participants receive an information guide, including a business plan outline, a list of information resources and contacts, financial worksheets, and a resource directory for specific business areas.

At the completion of the Smart Start seminars, entrepreneurs receive one-on-one, detailed assistance from personal counselors at the SBDC. Since 1982 the UI SBDC has served more than 6,000 businesses and individuals.

The seminars are repeated every week this fall in Room S104 of the Pappajohn Business Administration Building, located at Jefferson and Clinton Streets in Iowa City. The seminars meet from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 14, Oct. 21, Nov. 4, Nov. 11, Nov. 18, and Dec. 4; and from 10 a.m. to noon on Oct. 28, Nov. 24, and Dec. 9.

Registration for each session is $10; pre-registration is required through the SBDC. For more information, contact Kathryn Kurth, SBDC associate director at (319) 335-3742.
