Hubbard honored as 'new professional of year' by Iowa Student Personnel Association

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Steven Hubbard, a student program coordinator in the University of Iowa Office of Orientation Services, has been recognized by the Iowa Student Personnel Association as the outstanding new professional of the year.

As student program coordinator, Hubbard directs the recruitment, hiring, training, and supervision of 24 student orientation advisers. Over the past year he has served more than 5,000 new students by coordinating the advising, testing, and registration process. He also helped develop the new student handbook.

Deb Liddell, UI associate professor in the Student Development in Postseconday Education Program, nominated Hubbard for his exceptional performance.

Liddell sees Hubbard as an "ethical, innovative, and caring professional with the highest of standards."

Hubbard, a native of Gowrie, is active in state and community organizations, serving as state coordinator for the National Orientation Directors Association, and has been involved with the Johnson County Volunteer Action Center. He has served as a volunteer counselor at the Iowa City Free Medical Clinic, and served on the University Health Advisory Committee, the University Task Force on the Health of the Student, and the United Way Day of Caring project.

He also worked in the UI Office of Campus Programs as a graduate assistant. Liddell says that it has been a privilege to teach Hubbard, and says, "He has been an incredible addition to the staff and has served new students well."
