Relief fund to aid Hurricane Mitch victims established by UI department
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- The Office of International Education, a department
in the University of Iowa College of Education, has established a disaster
relief fund for Central Americans left homeless and without food in the
wake of Hurricane Mitch. The hurricane devastated various cities in that
region earlier this month.
A Central American Relief Fund (CARF) account was opened at the First
National Bank of Iowa City. Persons who wish to contribute money should
forward their donations made out to the department, N297 Lindquist Center,
The University of Iowa, 52242. All donations will be deposited to CARF.
The Johnson County Red Cross will channel the contributions to the appropriate
Red Cross agencies, says Paul Retish, director and special education professor
in the department.
Because of damaged roads and bridges throughout the country, the delivery
of goods to the victims has been slowed, consequently making monetary donations
to the Red Cross more important so that goods can be purchased locally
and then distributed.
