UI doctoral student wins Fulbright-Hays fellowship for study in India
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Prasenjit Gupta, a University of Iowa doctoral candidate
in comparative literature, has won a Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation
Abroad Fellowship. The fellowship will allow him to spend 12 months in
India, where he will work with Indian author Nirmal Verma on an English
translation of Verma's Hindi fiction.
Gupta has a master of fine arts degree in creative writing from the
UI Writers' Workshop and is focusing his doctoral work on tackling the
problems of literary translation between Hindi and English, two geographically
and culturally distant languages.
The Fulbright-Hays fellowships are designed to contribute to the development
and improvement of the study of modern foreign languages and area studies
in the United States by providing opportunities for doctoral candidates
to conduct research abroad. The awards are highly competitive and are
made based on candidates' academic records, foreign language skills, and
ability to conduct research in a foreign cultural context.
